What does Nutrition mean? Nutrition is defined as the process of providing or obtaining the food necessary for health and growth. Nutrition plays a HUGE role in our lives and our dog’s lives, but they don’t get to choose what they eat. Well, maybe some of them do (table thieves!). It is up to us to give our dogs proper nutrition to make sure they live a long, healthy life.

The first step is understanding what a dog is designed to eat. Contrary to the belief that dogs are omnivores, they are really carnivores. They have teeth and a digestive system designed for meat. Their ancestors are wolves, so their diet is going to be similar to a wolf. Yes, dogs have evolved, and their diets may have changed up a little, but that is because we as humans have decided to make our lives a little easier by inventing kibble. Kibble is highly processed! We fully understand that not everyone is capable of feeding a raw diet, which is the most biologically appropriate diet for a dog or cat. And that is okay! Fortunately, there are so many things you can do now if you have to feed a kibble diet. Plus, there are amazing companies out there (which we carry) who try to go above and beyond to make sure you are getting a high-quality, safe, nutritional kibble. There are also things you can add into a dog’s current diet to make sure they are receiving proper nutrition that kibble is lacking since it’s processed.

No matter what kibble you feed, it is always going to be lacking something. Adding fresh foods to your pet’s diet can greatly improve what nutrients your dog is receiving. At Hungry Hound, we have many “food toppers” you can add to your pet’s kibble to help your pet thrive. We carry everything from freeze-dried diets to raw goats’ milk and even vegetables!

The less processed the diet, the better. A completely balanced raw diet is going to be the optimal diet to feed your dog or cat. This diet is full of nutrients your pet’s body needs to thrive and be happy! Just think, would you want to eat highly processed brown pebbles every single day? Just like we rotate foods daily, our pets should be as well. Different fresh foods have a large variety of nutritional values our pets can benefit from!
