“Dog Days are approaching; you must, therefore, make both hay and haste while the Sun shines, for when old Sirius takes command of the weather, he is such an unsteady, crazy dog, there is no dependence upon him.”
The Old Farmer’s Almanac, 1817

No matter where you are now, it’s HOT! The Dog Days of Summer runs from July 3rd to August 11th. The name comes from ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome because it coincides with the rising of Sirius, the Dog Star. The Egyptians welcomed the coming of the Dog days because it brought with it fertile soil in which to plant. However, the Greeks and Romans weren’t as happy to see this time of year arrive because they felt it brought drought and plagues. Some welcome rain during this period, while others don’t, as depicted in this old verse:

Dog Days bright and clear
Indicate a happy year;
But when accompanied by rain,
For better times, our hopes are vain.

No matter how you feel about this time of year, it’s important to keep your pets cool and comfortable. We know we’re stating the obvious, but don’t leave your dogs in hot cars. It takes mere minutes for the temperature in the car to go from okay to uncomfortable to deadly. If they can’t come with you inside, leave them at home. PLEASE!

When you are out and about, be sure to check the temperature of the asphalt. If it is uncomfortable to your hand, it is going to be painful for your pooch. Look for cooler concrete, grassy areas, or carry them to the destination. If that’s not possible, don’t dilly dally while walking across the hot pavement. If you see someone you know, find a cooler area in which to stop and chat. Your dog’s feet will thank you later.

Always have water available when you are outside with your dog. It is of crucial importance if you’re being active – hiking, walking, playing – but even if you’re outside sitting on a blanket, a dog can easily get overheated. Hungry Hound carries several different types of water bottles with built in bowls as well as collapsible bowls.

Taking along a cooler to your destination? Throw in some frozen treats for when they are good boys and girls and frozen toppers for their meals. Not sure what kind of frozen treats to bring? We carry several different types of frozen yogurts, fruits, and vegetables. You can also create your own frozen treats with an ice cube tray filled with bone broth, goat’s milk or fresh fruit puree!

If you’re attending an event where there is food around and you’d like some peace while you eat, freeze some broth, goat’s milk or any type of food in pate form into a slow feeding bowl or lick mat. The dogs will be kept busy and get a delicious snack while you’re having your burger.

These ideas will keep you and your dog happy while experiencing quality time with you outdoors. They’re also great ideas for lazy days at home. Either way, enjoy the rest of your summer with your furry friends and keep cool!
