Grooming Is About So Much More Than Looking Cute

We all love picking our best friend up from the groomer and seeing them looking fresh, fluffy, and like a whole new dog. The cute haircut is definitely part of the fun, but there’s actually a lot more happening during a grooming appointment than you might realize. Regular grooming helps keep your dog comfortable and gives us a chance to pay attention to their coat, skin, nails, ears, and all those little things that can be pretty easy to miss at home.

Let’s talk about those nails

If you can hear your pup’s nails clicking across the floor, there’s a good chance they’re ready for a trim. Keeping nails at a healthy length is about more than how they look. When they get too long, they can affect the way your dog’s paws sit on the ground and make walking uncomfortable. They’re also more likely to snag, crack, or break.

Nails are also a good example of why every dog’s grooming schedule looks a little different. Some dogs need their nails trimmed much more often than they need a bath or haircut, so there’s no need to wait for their next full grooming appointment to have them taken care of. We offer walk-in nail trimming services so you can bring your furry friend in to get them trimmed in between grooming sessions.

There’s a lot hiding under all that fur

Unless you’re regularly checking your dog’s coat and skin, it’s really easy for little changes to go unnoticed. During a grooming appointment, we’re working closely with your dog from head to toe, which gives us a pretty good opportunity to notice things that might otherwise be hidden under their coat.

Sometimes that’s a new lump or bump, an irritated area, dry or flaky skin, a scab, or just something that looks a little different than usual. Groomers can’t diagnose what’s going on, of course, but we can let you know what we noticed so you’re aware of it and can decide if it’s something you want to keep an eye on or have checked out.

Little tangles can become big problems

If you have a long-haired, curly, or fluffy dog, you probably know how quickly tangles seem to appear out of nowhere. One day there’s a tiny knot behind their ear, and the next time you check it feels twice the size. Areas behind the ears, under the legs, around the tail, and anywhere a collar or harness rubs are especially easy to miss.

When those tangles aren’t worked out, they can tighten into mats that pull against the skin and become uncomfortable. Brushing and combing at home between appointments can make a huge difference, but regular grooming also helps us stay ahead of matting before it gets to that point. It’s much easier on everyone, especially your dog, when we can maintain their coat instead of having to tackle tight mats after they’ve already formed.

Don’t forget about the ears

Ear cleaning might not be the most exciting part of a spa day, but it’s another important part of the grooming process. Cleaning helps remove dirt and buildup, while also giving us a chance to take a closer look at what’s going on inside your dog’s ears.

If we notice something unusual, like redness, irritation, discharge, or an odor that seems out of the ordinary, we can bring it to your attention. It’s another reason we love having the opportunity to see your pups regularly. When we get familiar with what’s normal for a specific dog, it can be easier to notice when something seems different.

The cute haircut is just one part of it

Of course, we still want you to be obsessed with how your dog looks when you pick them up. We love a fluffy face and a good before and after as much as everyone else! But at the end of the day, grooming is truly about keeping your dog comfortable and cared for. Maintaining their nails, preventing mats, cleaning their ears, and getting a close look at their skin are all part of the appointment too.
