There has been a lot of talk about the recent outbreak of canine influenza in the Midwest, especially Chicago. There have been more than 1,000 cases nationwide with this particular strand of influenza.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Canine Influenza is easily spread – just like the human flu. Through coughing, sneezing and direct contact. That’s why it spreads so quickly. If you think your dog has been exposed to the virus, keep your pooch away from other dogs and make an appointment with your vet immediately. If it’s caught early, this flu can easily be treated. But you surely don’t want to expose other dogs and spread the virus. We also ask that if you have a grooming appointment with us, leave your furry-friend at home and we’ll be more than happy to reschedule.

Coughing
Sneezing
Yellow or greenish mucus around the eyes and nose
Difficultly breathing
Loss of appetite
Lethargy
IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER
The canine flu can spread rapidly and is very common when your dog is exposed to other sick dogs; think dog parks, boarding/kennels, dog shows and doggy daycare. If you think that your dog has been exposed, keep a close eye on him/her. Canine influenza does not have “seasons” like the human flu. Keep your dog’s defenses up year-round with a balanced and healthy diet. A healthy body starts from within and if your dog is healthy he can battle a number of illnesses.
