It’s flea and tick season again!

q34

Warm summer weather means more than flip-flops and relaxing in the sun. It means those annoying fleas and ticks are back- and worse than ever! Fleas can cause your pet to be uncomfortable and itchy, but they can also cause much more serious health problems. On the other hand, ticks can transmit Lyme’s Disease, which can also be transmitted to us humans! We have a lot of SAFE options to help you get rid of fleas and ticks or prevent the problem all together.

Here are some tips in preventing your pet from getting these little parasites.

1.) Find NATURAL flea and tick control at Hungry Hound. Why Natural? Other flea and tick control products contain chemicals and toxins (specifically permethrins) that are dangerous for your pet and can cause issues such as skin irritation, seizures, neurological problems, and even death. These products are likely to be carcinogenic (cancer causing) to humans and extremely dangerous around small children. Does this seem like something you would want for your furry family member? At Hungry Hound, our products contain natural active ingredients such as peppermint oil, cinnamon oil, lemon grass oil, and thyme oil that are a natural repellant and kill those pests. They even smell great!

2.) Fleas and ticks absolutely love long grass and shady outdoor spots. Try keeping them away by mowing regularly and removing tall weeds. At Hungry Hound, we carry a spray that kills pre-existing fleas and ticks and also prevents them from inhabiting your lawn.  Simply hook it up to your hose and spray your yard.  Easy!

3.) If you find a flea on one pet, make sure to treat ALL of your pets. Just to be on the safe side.

4.) Finally, these parasites are drawn to dogs with low immune systems. They tend to stay away if you are feeding your dog a biologically appropriate diet and keeping them in tip-top shape.

Be sure to check your dog every day to make sure the fleas and ticks are staying away!

Why Food Toppers?

Have a picky eater? Or do you already put cooked ground meat or cheese mixed in with your pet’s kibble to make him/her more interested? If this sounds like you, try out our FOOD TOPPERS! Hungry Hound has a variety of raw, freeze-dried, and dehydrated options that your pup will go nuts for!

You may be asking yourself: “Why would using these food toppers be better than using a cooked meat, cheese, etc.?” The answer is that raw is simply what your carnivore is designed to eat. It has all the natural enzymes and nutrients your dog needs that aren’t found in processed kibble. Although you may be feeding a high quality kibble, dogs aren’t made to eat a kibble-based food and need extra enzymes to help break them down. Furthermore, using a cooked meat actually takes away the natural enzymes and nutrients raw meat provides.

Now don’t go running to the grocery store buying raw meat. They are packed with hormones and antibiotics that may make your dog sick! Our selection has no hormones, is antibiotic free, has no artificial flavors or colorings, and some are even organic. These food toppers are easy to feed, as they are freeze-dried and break apart easily. They provide all the nutrients and benefits of a complete diet your dog will thrive on!

It’s a great time to walk!

May is just around the corner, and that means much warmer weather and sunshine galore.  This is always a great time to take inventory of your walking gear, and replace the old worn out items with some new cheery and ultra-functional collars, harnesses, and leashes.  Just arrived are my personal favorite, the martingale collars.

Martingale collars, also known as double loop collars, slip over the head and can be worn a little more loose for comfort if so desired.  They have a “loop” which will tighten the collar around your dog’s neck if they pull or try to back out of it.   The advantage of using a martingale collar over a standard collar is that a standard buckle collar has to fit tight enough that it can’t slip over the ears when pulled forward by a dog backing up, it must be uncomfortably tight all the time. The martingale collar allows the dog to wear a comfortably loose collar that is only tight when it needs to be tight.

Hungry Hound carries martingale collars by Wiggles, Wags, and Whiskers, who guarantee their collars to not break.  They come in tons of sizes and widths, are lined with comfy and soft velvet, and can even be machine washed!

April showers bring May flowers, and anxiety

This week has been one for the record book with the rain we’ve received!  And it just reminds me that NW Indiana is in the beginning of the severe storm season and it’s time to get out my arsenal of anxiety remedies for my poor Lexie.  Lexie suffers from storm anxiety.  I always know what’s headed our way because of how Ms. Lexie is acting.  So off I go, in search of her Thundershirt to help calm things down a bit, though she still wants to hide in the shower.

St. John-20110724-053

When the Thundershirt is not delivering enough calming action (probably because I forgot to put it on her until it was too late), I give her a chewable calmer by Pet Naturals.  These little chews always do the trick!  And they must taste great, because all 3 of my dogs come running when they hear the bag open, and even Lexie lets out a little drool in anticipation.

We have all of these products, and more, to help your pets keep their cool when Mother Nature is whipping up a frenzy outside.  See you soon!

Spring is here – are your dogs prepared?

grass

The approaching warmer weather means lots of long walks with your furry friends on wooded trails and watching Fido and Bella do their favorite thing in the backyard… playfully roll around in the thick, green grass.   Unfortunately, warmer temps also bring out the bugs, especially ticks.  Ticks are attracted to warmth and motion which is why our pets are often their target.  To help protect both you and your playful pup this Spring and Summer, here’s what you need to know about these pesky little critters:

- Ticks are blood sucking parasites that latch onto their host, feeding until they’ve had their fill – charming little buggers!

- These are the 4 most common “hard” ticks found in Indiana and what they look like:

american dog tick

black legged tick

brown dog tick

lone star tick

  • Dermacentor variabilis (American dog tick, also known as the “eastern wood tick”)
  • Ixodes scapularis (black-legged tick, also known as “deer tick” or “lyme disease tick”)
  • Rhipicephalus sanguineus (brown dog tick)
  • Amblyomma americanum (lone star tick)

- Ticks lurk in grassy areas waiting for their next meal – but don’t think you’re out of the woods (pardon the pun) if you live in the city as they can be found in urban areas too.  When not attached and feeding on their hosts, most hard ticks live on the ground in vegetation, such as grassy meadows, woods, brush, weeds, leaf litter, etc.  Most ticks will crawl to the tips of grasses, brush, leaves, or branches and wait.  With their front legs outstretched, they will wait for a host to brush up against them. When the tick does come into contact with an animal, it will grab on and crawl to an appropriate area on the animal to feed.

- Once a tick attaches to your pup, they can feed for several hours or even days, leading to itching, irritation and inflammation. Ouch!  Ticks also carry diseases including Lyme disease, which affects both people and animals.

- Ticks like to nestle into warm spots around the ears, legs and tummy.  To help keep your pooch tick-free, check them daily during the Spring and Summer months by running your fingers through their fur to feel any small bumps. Make sure you check between their toes, under armpits and behind ears.

- You can protect your pup from ticks by adding a Frontline treatment when you have your dog groomed at Hungry Hound which will both prevent and treat for ticks.   Frontline recommends that you apply the product every four weeks.  Once dead, most ticks will drop off naturally. If they don’t, try removing them with a gentle pull – preferably with tweezers. If the tick doesn’t come out, don’t pull harder as the mouthparts may be left in the skin, leading to infection. Instead take your pet to the vet.

- Hungry Hound offers a fantastic selection of natural flea and tick repellents that can be used daily.   Look for these products on our shelves now and get your hounds ready for Spring and Summer!

Makeover Monday

Say hello to Sherri!  Her new family brought her straight to Hungry Hound as soon as they rescued her so she could have the spa day she so deserved.  Our groomer Edie gave Sherri a nice, short clean up – no more mats for this gal!  What a lucky lady Sherri is as her new family also has Chopper, one super cute yorkie.  You may remember Chopper as he was once a Makeover Monday model himself.   We sure loved meeting Sherri and look forward to seeing her thrive with her new, loving family.

here’s Sherri when she showed up for her grooming appointment…

and here she is all clean and happy…

Thanks Sherri for being such a super model!

It’s sad enough when your beloved furry friends are in need of wound care so we strive to offer products that will make your pets as comfortable as they can be while healing.  New to our shelves are PawFlex bandages – disposable, non adhesive, breathable, soft, super stretch bandages with a wound pad already attached.

PawFlex bandages create a clean environment for your dogs wound to heal.  Because they are water resistant and breathable there will be no moisture build up which can be a breeding ground for bacteria.  Your dog will also not be tempted to lick or bite because of the discomfort of adhesives.

The PawFlex™ Basic Bandage is for any part of your dogs’ leg.  The super stretch material flexes in all joint degrees and angles and moves gently and smoothly with your active dog.  This bandage is gentle and soft enough for the tiniest breed and strong and tough enough for the largest of breeds.

The PawFlex™ MediMitt Bandage is for your dogs’ paws.  It has no designated front or back so you can direct the wound pad portion directly over the wound no matter where it is located on the paw.  The fastener is a non-slip strap with velcro.  For outdoor protection, PawFlex has also designed a disposable water proof Cover/Protector that slips right over the MediMitt and utilizes the same fastener to keep the MediMitt clean and dry during outside use.

Will my dog accept them?

Because there are no adhesives tugging at their fur AND the fabric is soft like cotton, your dog will be totally comfortable in PawFlex bandages and forget that they even have one on.

Will PawFlex bandages stay on?

Yes, thanks to the unique double catch fastener, super stretch material and non slip grip, PawFlex bandages are designed to stay on.

Are PawFlex bandages waterproof?

PawFlex bandages are water resistant which means they will repel water unless fully submerged. You need not worry about the bandage becoming waterlogged from licking or rain drops.  Because they are not fully waterproof, they maintain good breathability at all times.

Will my dog be comfortable?

Pawflex is made from a super soft and high stretch material that molds, flexes and moves gently with your dog throughout their daily activities.  And of course, non adhesive means  absolutely NO fur pulling or skin ripping.   Your dog will no longer obsess over licking and gnawing at his bandage and wound site do to the discomfort and alluring scent of adhesives.  PawFlex bandages are the most comfortable pet bandages on the market today.

We sure hope you never need products like these but if you do, our shelves are stocked with some of the best wound care products available.  Hungry Hound is here to help!
