Is your dog ready for a taste bud revolution? Transitioning from kibble to freeze-dried or raw food can be an amazing way to enhance their nutrition and overall well-being. However, it’s important to make the switch gradually and ensure a smooth transition for your furry friend. In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the steps of transitioning your pup to freeze-dried or raw food with care and patience.

First things first, stop at one of Hungry Hound’s three locations (after reading last week’s blog post) to pick out the best food option for your dog and create a nutritional plan with one of our retail team members. Always remember that slow and steady wins the taste buds. When it comes to switching your dog’s diet, patience is key. Sudden changes can upset their tummy and lead to digestive issues. Start by introducing small portions of the new food while gradually decreasing the amount of kibble over time.

Begin with a mix of 75% kibble and 25% freeze-dried or raw food, and monitor your dog closely to see any adverse reactions. To entice your dog more to their food and make the transition more enjoyable, try mixing a small amount of warm water or low-sodium broth with the freeze-dried or raw food. This will help release the aromas and flavors, making it more appealing to your pup. It’s like throwing a palatable pheromone party for their senses! Continue adjusting the ratio gradually like shown in the attached graphic, increasing the proportion of freeze-dried or raw food while reducing the amount of kibble. Aim for a 50/50 mix after a few days, and then move towards a 75% freeze-dried or raw food and 25% kibble blend. Observe your dog’s response during each stage of the transition and adjust the pace accordingly.

Make sure to continue listening to your pup’s digestive symphony! Every dog is unique, so monitor them for any signs of digestive upset such as loose stools or excessive gas. If you notice discomfort, slow down the transition process or go back a step to give their tummy more time to adjust. Always remember that if you need help, ask questions! Consult with your vet or a trusted canine nutritionist (or the AWESOME retail team members at Hungry Hound!). They can provide personalized advice based on your dog’s specific needs, health conditions, and dietary requirements. Their expertise will help you navigate the switch with confidence. Here’s to a happy and healthy dining experience for your furry companion!
