I've been making some changes to Ria and Quinn's routine now that winter is HERE, and I thought I'd share what's been working for us, so you and your floof can enjoy the benefits too!

So first thing - coconut oil! I've started adding into their food because the dry winter air is rough on their skin. They actually love the taste, which is a bonus. Just a heads up though, you'll want to build up to the full dose slowly. I started with 25% of the dosage for a couple days, then 50% for a couple days then finally the full amount on the 7th day. Every dog is different, so if your pup needs more time at each level, just go with what feels right. This same staggered build-up approach works great for introducing Earthy supplements like turmeric too.

Speaking of winter coats - I'm keeping theirs a bit longer for warmth, but wow, it's more work! I've had to add in extra baths between grooming and utilize deep conditioners. When their coat and skin get dry, the tangles just appear out of nowhere.

Oh, and here's something that is a game changer - winter is actually the perfect time to start prepping for spring allergies. Quinn's allergies are absolutely terrible, so we're building up his tolerance now while his immune system isn't already fighting off allergens. It's way easier to figure out the right dose and routine now than scrambling when everything's blooming.

I've also been giving them extra bone broth this winter. The collagen is great for their skin and tummies, plus I warm it up on really cold mornings to help get their body temperature up. Quinn dives right in, but Ria? She has to sniff it and circle it a few times before she's convinced. Classic Ria.

If you're unsure on where to start, I would start with one of the below to work into your floof's winter routine.

1. Immune System Support: Cold weather and increased indoor time stress your dog's immune system. Since 70% of immune function originates in the gut, focus on:

  • Pro and prebiotics for gut health

    • Reminder: don’t add any hot water or broth to avoid, otherwise the pro-biotics will be killed off.

  • Turkey tail mushrooms to enhance immune response

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants

2. Skin & Coat Protection: Indoor heating and cold air create a moisture-stripping double threat. Combat dryness with:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids to support the skin's lipid barrier from within

  • Coconut oil for paw pads exposed to salt and de-icing chemicals

  • Regular grooming to distribute natural oils and stimulate circulation

3. Joint & Muscle Health: Cold causes muscles to contract and stiffen, reducing flexibility and increasing injury risk—the classic "chilled to the bone" effect. Keep them moving comfortably with:

  • Glucosamine and chondroitin for cartilage and joint fluid

  • Turmeric for natural anti-inflammatory support

  • CBD to ease muscle tension and pain

  • Bone broths and milks for hydration and joint lubrication
